The NASA ParaWing5 is a power kite with a brand new look. This flexible kite contains no spars or air chambers. This makes the kite highly crash-resistant. The bridle construction of the NPW5 gives you the choice to fly it as a dual line or as a quad line foil. This kite is suitable for buggying or other kite-sailing applications. Incredible power at an absolutely amazing price!!! (Comparable 4sq meter foils would cost between $350 and $500 instead of $159!)

NASA Parawing History

A great place to start is in the NASA history archives, available at http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/index.html A keyword search on "Rogallo" will yield dozens of references, including NASA's attempt to design a glider reentry system, and then later an emergency flexible glider to escape from orbit back to earth.

From astronautix.com, a picture and description of the first reentry glider:

Handles

Quadrifoil Medium Handles

NPW5's do not come with line or handles. Order Quadrifoil Medium Handles (shown above) for quad-line flying (2-inch wide or padded wrist straps for dual-line flying).

For NasaWings 9.5sqm and larger we strongly recommend quad-line control and the larger Flexifoil Blade Handles for greater control (shown below with Quadrifoil Medium Handles for reference):

Flexifoil Blade Handles (Left) / Quadrifoil Medium Handles (Right)

Line Sets

Power Line is recommended for water sports because of its extra stiffness. (Power Line resists tangling when kite is resting on the surface and line is not under tension.) Standard Spectra is adequate for land-based applications. For Nasawings use 300# for dual-line mode and 300#/200# for quad-line mode if you weight less than 220lb. If you weigh more than 200lbs or use them for water applications the 500#/200# will serve you better. For extreme situations you might also consider the 500#/300# option.

For most land-based applications 50-100ft length are good w/75ft being most popular. For most water-based applications 100-150ft lengths are used. Shorter lengths within the given range are easier to handle in more overpowered conditions. Longer lengths give more sustained power in lighter wind situations.
