Danny Helms

Employed by GE here in Decatur, Danny spends much time flying at the Decatur Utilities Field on his way home from work every day. He's the ultimate local Griffin pilot who loves to share his joy for the sport with prospective new enthusiasts. I believe one of his favorite tricks is to surprise new pilots with how hard these kites can pull!

About two weeks after I discovered dual-line kites I met Danny out at Point Mallard (before the golf driving range took the open field). He drove up and pulled out his (at the time 6yr-old) Griffin and handed me the straps. I was instantly, hopelessly hooked. We flew a pair of Griffins together 4-5 times per week for the next 8 months. Needless to say, we acquired the uncanny ability to (almost) always read each other's minds.

Danny has flown Griffins for about nine years now, and more recently he's acquired a Crystal Kites' C-3 (1997), a Flying Wings' Condor (1998), and one of Dodd's new Black Rainbow Jams (1999).

Here's another great shot of Danny flying his Condor in front of some awesome clouds.

Here we see Danny and me (in mid-turn) flying a pair of Crystal Kites' C-3's. His is the Black Blade. I (regretfully) sold my older (matching) White Blade, and I'm seen flying a Blue Chain with him in this shot.

Here's a picture of Danny's Red/Black 3-Stripe Griffin at Decatur Utilities (6/12/99) preparing for flight. He flew until dark this afternoon with Wylie "Buddy" Faust. The Pink/Purple 3-Stripe Griffin in the pictures below is Wylie's.
